Colombia has emerged as a favored wedding destination for many foreigners from around the world, particularly drawing attention from celebrities seeking an exceptional matrimonial experience.

The allure of a wedding in the historic center of Cartagena or on the beaches of San Andres is captivating couples from abroad who choose Colombia as their ideal wedding location.

Economic impact of foreign weddings in Colombia

A study conducted by ProColombia, (a governmental entity promoting international tourism), has highlighted the country as a sought-after tourist destination for foreign couples planning their wedding celebrations, with Americans and Spaniards leading the list.

The study encompassed insights from 70 specialized tourism companies, providing information about the financial influx, dynamics, and specific attractions that draw couples from abroad to Colombia.

Initial data from the survey emphasizes the economic impact of such events on the destinations. As per respondents, over 40% of weddings generate income ranging from US$20,000 to US$50,000, approximately between 78 and 200 million Colombian pesos. These funds primarily flow into areas such as venue rentals, food and beverage services, and decorations.

Origin of the couples

“The United States stands out as the predominant country of residence of couples choosing Colombia as their wedding destination, leading with 71.4%. Following are Spain, Canada, and Mexico, each sharing 4.3% representation. More than 70% of respondents mentioned hosting couples for second weddings, with 44% of these originating from the United States,” the ProColombia study indicates.

Analyzing demographics, the organization found that over half of the foreign couples selecting Colombia for their weddings fall within the 25 to 34 age bracket. Additionally, more than 70% of weddings involve 50 to 150 guests.

Preferred dates and locations

The survey highlights five Colombian cities frequented by foreigners for their weddings, with Cartagena and Medellín leading the ranking.

“We observe an increasing demand concentration in destinations like Cartagena, Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta, and Cali, and this economic infusion positively impacts the development of these cities. We are committed to further boosting this trend, fostering economic growth, and strengthening Colombia’s position as a wedding destination,” noted ProColombia’s President, Carmen Caballero.

Regarding the favored months for weddings in Colombia, March, August, November, and December stand out, with service providers organizing at least five weddings annually during these periods.
