The renowned Colombian airline Avianca has clinched the title of the world’s most punctual in 2023. Data released by Cirium, an analytical firm, on January 2, 2024, showed that nearly 86% of its flights arrived on time, a score which secured for the airline the pinnacle of global punctuality.

In Cirium’s 2023 On-Time Performance Review, Avianca, with an 85.73% punctuality rate across 213,039 flights to 75 destinations in 25 countries across the Americas and Europe, leads Cirium’s rankings. This marks a significant leap from its sixth position in 2022, underscoring its remarkable improvement in just a year.

Avianca the most punctual in the world

This distinction marks the first time a Colombian airline has been crowned the most punctual globally, surpassing industry giants such as Qatar Airways, Delta Air Lines, Iberia, Latam Airlines, and American Airlines.

Frederico Pedreira, Avianca’s CEO, celebrated the achievement, stating, “Surpassing world-class airlines is a milestone that puts Colombia at the forefront of the industry. Being the most punctual airline is a tremendous achievement by the 14,000+ people on our team dedicated to connecting Latin America with the world.”

Cirium’s Annual Punctuality Results

Avianca has maintained good performance throughout the year, consistently ranking at the top spot in several months and maintaining a consecutive top 5 position between February and October. Cirium’s annual punctuality results are derived from a thorough analysis of over 35 million flights, considering factors such as schedules and adherence to arrival times.

Following its 2020 bankruptcy, Avianca has adopted a more efficient, cost-effective business model. While some criticisms have surfaced on social media—of minor importance when set against the high punctuality rate—the transformation led since 2024 by executive Federico Pedreira demonstrates an effective approach to operational improvement.

In the punctuality rankings, Avianca surpasses Azul Brazilian Airlines and Qatar Airways, with 85.51% and 85.11% punctuality rates, respectively. Mike Malik, Cirium’s marketing director, emphasized, “It’s an airline that underwent significant transformation: changed its name and adopted a new business model,” highlighting Avancia’s ability to evolve and adapt to industry demands.
