A bronze statue of Shakira, standing at 6.5 meters in height, was unveiled on Tuesday at the Gran Malecon in Barranquilla, Colombia, as a tribute to her artistic career and her legacy for the Colombian Caribbean city.
The sculpture, created by the renowned local artist Yino Marquez, was unveiled during an emotional ceremony. Although Shakira was not able to be present, she expressed her gratitude through her X account. “Thanks to the sculptor Yino Marquez and the students of the district art school for this display of the enormous artistic talent of the people from my homeland,” expressed the artist.
The statue captures the essence of the artist in her most characteristic element: dance. With a skirt with openings that resemble waves, her loose hair, and palms joined above her head, the figure represents the energy and dynamism that have characterized the singer’s career.
Details of the sculpture
The process of creating this statue was meticulous and detailed. Over 30 workers labored for months to bring this artistic representation to life. The skirt of the sculpture is made of aluminum and coated with enamel varnish, aiming to preserve its splendor over time.
The plaque accompanying the statue offers a glimpse into Shakira’s transcendence, not only as an artist but as a symbol of inspiration and social commitment. From her iconic hip movements to her dedication to humanitarian causes, the plaque commemorates her legacy and influence in both music and the social sphere.
