Mark Ruffalo, the American actor known for portraying Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has congratulated Colombian President Gustavo Petro for his speech at the COP28 summit in Dubai advocating for the abandonment of fossil fuels.

Ruffalo, also known for his social activism, has extended his acknowledgment to Colombia’s Minister of Environment for her staunch opposition to major oil companies and her support for renewable energy use.

This marks the second time the actor has praised President Petro for his environmental advocacy. The first instance was on August 10 during the Amazon Summit held in Belém do Pará, Brazil. On that occasion, Ruffalo wrote that ‘this kind of leadership is what humanity needs right now,’ referring to Colombia’s president.

Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

It is important to note that President Petro, alongside Environment Minister Susana Muhamad, is participating in the COP28 climate change summit in Dubai. In this context, Colombia has made various announcements regarding its environmental agenda, primarily focusing on the gradual phase-out of oil and other polluting fuels.

In this regard, the country discussed its adherence to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, as well as the presentation of a $34 billion investment portfolio focused on social and sustainable projects.

It is due to these announcements and the Colombian government’s stance in various international forums addressing climate change that the American actor has expressed admiration for these policies and for President Petro.

‘Dear Gustavo Petro and Susana Muhamad, your recent stance at COP28 against major oil companies is impressive. I hope people across Colombia can celebrate that thanks to your leadership, you are the first major economy in Latin America to join the groundbreaking initiative of an international treaty to halt fossil fuel extraction,’ the actor wrote on his X account.

A Call to World Leaders

Mark Ruffalo also took the opportunity to call on world leaders to ‘feel inspired enough to choose life over death, beauty over greed.’

In his speech at COP28, Petro also mentioned that those emitting the most CO2 and consuming the most carbon are amassing more wealth, while nations that do not do so sink into poverty, referencing the failure of the Paris Agreement signed in 2016, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, the actor highlighted that the head of state, in his intervention at the climate summit, reminded the world that Colombia is a country of beauty and that this decision represents a significant step toward protecting the Amazon.

Minister’s Video Call with Ruffalo

Following these statements, Minister Muhamad and the actor had a video call. The minister herself shared this information on her social media, displaying a screenshot of their interaction.

“Mark, it was a pleasure to have spoken with you and to have initiated synergy regarding the protection of the Amazon and Colombia’s commitment to non-proliferation of fossil fuels. As we discussed, the time to take action for the planet is now,” Muhamad tweeted.
