An afternoon of leisure on the paradisiacal beaches of Cartagena, Colombia turned into an unimaginable tragedy when Froilanis Maireth Rivas Roman, a 34-year-old woman, was struck by lightning, which killed her instantly. The shocking event was captured on a security video that has gone viral on social media, shaking the local community and the entire world.
The fateful episode took place at Playa Azul, in the La Boquilla district, while Froilanis was enjoying the sea with her family. Originally from Venezuela, she was immersed in the pleasure of the moment when, without warning, lightning struck her in broad daylight, claiming her life in an instant.
The shocking moment captured by security cameras
The images captured by a security camera show the exact moment when Froilanis, walking along the shore, is hit by the electrical discharge, falling lifeless onto the sand. A man close to her was also affected by the shock, although he managed to quickly get up and flee in terror.
In the video, a policeman, unaware of the tragedy, is startled by the thunder which followed the lightning, initially unaware of what had happened behind him.
After several lifeguards and beachgoers tried to assist Froilanis, an ambulance rushed her to the Serena del Mar Hospital, where she arrived in cardiorespiratory arrest. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, doctors eventually declared her dead.
The victim’s remains were transferred to the Forensic Medicine morgue in the Zaragocilla neighborhood for the corresponding procedures. This tragic event occurred amid a warning issued by Ideam about heavy rains in Cartagena and the Caribbean region for 72 hours, emphasizing the importance of caution during these times.
This event has shaken the city, drawing attention to the importance of being alert to adverse weather conditions, and has deeply saddened the Cartagena community.
