The first store of the Swedish multinational Ikea in Colombia will open its doors on September 28th at the Mallplaza NQS in Bogota, located on Carrera 30 with Calle 19 in the capital city. This initial point of sale in Colombia will have 26,000 square meters of exhibition space and a catalog of 6,000 products.
“We have worked tirelessly to ensure that our customers can experience IKEA to the fullest. We are proud to be able to reach Colombia and complement the local market with a new range of furniture and home decor products. We are convinced that having inspiring homes motivates people to pursue their dreams and build a better everyday life, and we want to be the ally of Colombians in this endeavor,” said Hasbleidy Castañeda, Manager of IKEA Colombia.
Starting from September 29th, the online sales portal will become operational, and according to the company, it will feature the same number of products in its portfolio as the physical store. Initially, the portal will only deliver to the city of Bogota, but it will gradually expand its delivery services to other cities across the country.
More Than 700 Jobs in Bogota
The furniture and decor company has announced that with the opening of its store in Bogota and the launch of its online sales platform, more than 700 direct jobs will be created in the capital. These jobs will encompass a wide range of functions with different profiles and levels of experience.
Over the past few months, profiles have been selected through the European company’s website. With just a few days left until the opening of the Bogota store, the positions are already filled: cashiers, warehouse workers, technicians, drivers, restaurant staff, and others make up an impressive team of professionals ready to bring competition to Colombia with their products.
Competition to Revolutionize the Sector
Currently, in Colombia, Homecenter practically has a monopoly on these types of services, along with the Chilean brand Easy, which is part of the Cencosud group. The former has been operating in Colombia for 30 years, opening its first store in Las Américas, Bogota, in 1993. Meanwhile, Easy did not arrive in Colombia until 2007, although it already had stores in Argentina and Chile, the countries where it was founded in the mid-1990s.
With the opening of Ikea, a global leader in its sector, the aim is to revolutionize the market by offering customers a wide variety of home furniture and decor options at competitive prices.
In 2024: Medellín and Cali
As announced a few months ago, the Bogotá location will be the first to start operations in the country. It will be followed by stores in Medellin and Cali in 2024. Ikea’s plan is to cover the three main Colombian cities during this time, offering a significant presence both in physical stores and online retail. These new locations, slated for next year, will bring the total number of employees in Colombia to 1,300.
The multinational’s expansion in South America will continue: following Chile, where they opened a store in August last year, and Colombia, where stores are opening in 2023 and 2024, Ikea’s first point of sale is scheduled to open in Peru in 2026.
