The success of Colombia’s participation in the Women’s World Cup, held in August 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, continues to grow. FIFA has announced that Colombian footballer Linda Caicedo has received the award for the best goal of the World Cup.
The echoes of the excellent impression left by Colombia in the latest Women’s World Cup continue to resonate. In addition to the success of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition, the award for the best goal of the championship goes to Linda Caicedo from Cali.
Goal against Germany the Best of the World Cup
The recognition specifically pertains to a goal that Colombia scored against Germany. It was the goal that opened the final victory for the Colombian team, 2-1 against the German side.
The play occurred in the 52nd minute of the match. It was the beginning of the second half when a loose ball remained in the area after a rebound from a shot by Manuela Vanegas that hit the German defense. Linda Caicedo was the quickest to reach the ball, taking control of it. Dribbling the ball from one foot to another, she evaded two German defenders and then sent a powerful shot with her right foot that went into the top corner of the goal defended by Merle Frohms, who couldn’t do anything to prevent Caicedo’s strike.
“The stunning goal by Linda Caicedo in the group stage against Germany has been voted as the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023,” the FIFA official website announced on August 28.
Linda’s Goal Beat Marta Cox’s
The Colombian narrowly outshone the goal scored by Panama’s Marta Cox with a free kick from 31.42 meters just two minutes into the game against France. Cox’s goal was the first of a total of 9 goals in a wild match that ended with Panama’s 3-6 defeat.
